敷地を意識するきっかけ

敷地の文脈／コンテクストを意識するきっかけは、大学1年の時の建築概論で教わったコルビュジエのサヴォア邸かもしれない。

近代建築の五原則(ピロティ、屋上庭園、自由な平面、水平連続窓、自由な立面)の全てが実現されているサヴォア邸は、1931年完成の20世紀の近代建築を代表する住宅で、そもそも近代建築とは、敷地の文脈／コンテクストから自立して世界中のどこに建てても成り立つ建築を標榜するものだった。

だから、近代建築は敷地の文脈／コンテクストとは無縁の存在であり、敷地の文脈／コンテクストが重視されるようになったきっかけも近代建築への反動からだった。

私が、建築概論の授業でサヴォア邸を教わった時、印象に残ったのは、近代建築の五原則が実現されていることや20世紀の近代建築を代表する建築だということでは無くて、車でアプローチしてきて、そのまま住宅の内部に駐車して、住宅の中で車から乗り降りをし、また車で外出していくように計画されていたこと。

これを20世紀のモータリゼーションの具現化だというのが定説のようだったが、私は1階の平面図にUの字状の車路が計画されているのが面白くて、その車路を見た時に敷地の中を車が走り抜けて街につながっていくイメージができて、そうしたら、この住宅はどういう場所に建っているのだろうか、車で入って来て車で出て行くことができる土地って相当広いよな、とか、建築より敷地の方が気になって仕方がなかった。

このサヴォア邸の計画は、その敷地ありきで、建築だけが自立して存在するなんて到底思えなかった。
