リノベーションは主に内部空間について行われる手法であり、外観には関しては従前の姿をそのまま引き継ぐか、補完するデザインで終わるか、全く新しい仕上げでパッケージングし直すかである。もしリノベーションの手法を新築に応用した場合は外観は時の流れをどのように継続すれば良いのだろうか。外観はそもそも周りとの環境の中で決まる部分もある。ただ、個人的な様も都市の色になり得るので、むしろ個人的なことを時の流れにのせてつなげてみたいと考えた。建替えとなると全く新しい仕上げでパッケージングし直すことになるがそれでは断絶するだけであり、時をつなげるには建替え後の外観が従前とのつながりで決定されれば良い。つなげるために従前の建築から何を抽出するか。スクラップアンドビルドにおいて他者になるものは何だろうか。
